If you are eligible for federal work study (as determined by your FAFSA information), applying for federal work study positions can have a number of benefits while at MBU and beyond.
1) Practice Interviewing– If you apply and are selected for an interview, you learn how to answer questions when put on the spot. This is not always easy but when practiced, it gets better!
2) Earn a Paycheck– If you are hired for a position, receiving a paycheck helps you build your finances and have extra funds for your daily living expenses. Earning an income can help you practice financial skills such as budgeting, saving, and investing.
3) Develop Your Soft Skills & Gain Experience– You will not only have hands-on experience within the department you work with, but you will learn or fine-tune your “soft skills.” Soft skills are transferable to any career path you may have, and being able to work with other people while providing excellent customer service will be important to your success. Just like interviewing, sometimes these skills take practice, and federal work study positions can help provide you with opportunities to get that practice. In addition, these skills and experiences can help boost your resume!
4) Create Connections & Build a Strong Network– You will gain a number of connections within the MBU community and make a positive difference for our community. Having a strong network will be useful as you progress into your life, and fostering your professional relationships is a key component of that. Knowing that you are helping the MBU community and your fellow classmates can be a rewarding experience.
