Why study abroad for a year?

MBU senior Brett McDaniel arrived in Tokyo in March to spend the spring semester at Soka University. As an education major, Brett chose Soka in order to expand his knowledge of educational practices and to immerse himself in Japanese culture. Halfway through his program Brett made the decision to extend his stay at Soka and will now be there until the end of January of 2024.

What made Brett choose to stay for an entire academic year?

Brett’s study abroad experience is directly tied to his career goal: to teach English in Japan after graduation. By staying for a full year Brett will not only be able to improve his Japanese proficiency to an intermediate-advanced level, he will also be able to take additional education courses and begin exploring teaching options by meeting with representatives of English teaching organizations like the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program. This additional time spent abroad will give Brett an important advantage in his chosen career field!

“This is such a good opportunity for me to build my connections and to get a full year of experience.”
