If you are debating on whether you should apply for the Virginia Program at Oxford (VPO), go for it! My time at Oxford was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had, both academically and socially. VPO is a 6-week program where you live and study at St. Anne’s College in the University of Oxford.
One of the best things about VPO is being able to participate in the English system of learning. It is very different from the American system many of us have grown accustomed to since kindergarten because it combines daily lectures and weekly small-group tutorials. To some, the idea of studying abroad and tackling a new style of education may seem overwhelming. However, I found this structure highly educationally constructive, and you should not lose the opportunity to experience it for yourself. All of the tutors are so nice and willing to help anyone with any problems. The lecturers are some of the leaders in their respective fields, and it was an honor to learn from them.
Naturally, no study abroad is complete without some cultural immersion. VPO includes trips to a few Shakespeare performances and tours of historical landmarks. Still, there is plenty of fun to be had in and around Oxford. Oxford is a city like any other with plenty of pubs, theaters, and activities. Without a doubt the thing that made my VPO experience so amazing was the people I met through the program. This is not a Mary Baldwin-specific program, so you meet people from Hampden-Sydney, Sweet Briar, Roanoke, VMI, and Washington & Lee. Then you spend the summer exploring England with them. We were able to explore Oxford, London, and even Scotland together. The people I met through this program remain some of my best friends.
The Virginia Program at Oxford was one of the most formative experiences that I had the pleasure of being a part of. I hope you also take advantage of this terrific opportunity.
