Internship with the Harrisonburg Police Department

Location: Harrisonburg, VA

The City of Harrisonburg is offering students the opportunity to combine academic studies with on-the-job training and experience while completing their education through an unpaid internship. Currently, the City is accepting applications to fill up to two Spring 2024 opportunities.

Maximum weekly hours will be determined based on a variety of factors, including applicant availability and class schedule, and are anticipated to be a minimum of 8 hours per week throughout the semester. Each week, you will be assigned to a new unit, division, or project, including but not limited to:

  • Patrol Division;
  • Emergency Communications Center;
  • Records Unit;
  • Community Resource Unit;
  • Major Crimes Unit;
  • Property Unit;
  • Specialty Units;
  • Command and Administration; and
  • Traffic.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Citizen of the United States or legal resident alien.
  • Current enrollment in a college or university with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above on a 4.0 scale.
  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • Availability to commit to a minimum of eight (8) hours per week for the semester.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Zero drug use or limited drug use, including review of type and frequency of use, will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Successful applicants for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

  • DMV Driving Record Review;
  • Criminal Background Check.

Physical Requirements: This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
