Staunton Montessori School is seeking dependable and flexible Substitute Teachers to support our staff and students on an as-needed basis. As a Substitute Teacher, you’ll help maintain consistency and care in classrooms and programs serving children ages 3–12. Ideal candidates are warm, adaptable, and ready to jump in wherever support is needed.

Key Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe, calm, and respectful environment while following the guidance and routines established by the lead teacher or Aftercare Director.
- Support students in their work, play, and transitions in a way that aligns with Montessori values and the school’s expectations for behavior and communication.
Supervise children during classroom activities, outdoor time, lunch, and rest, depending on the age group and setting.
- Collaborate with staff to ensure smooth coverage and consistency for students.
- Communicate any concerns or observations clearly and promptly to the appropriate classroom teacher or school administrator.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children, ideally ages 3–12, in a classroom, childcare, or group setting.
- Friendly, calm, and dependable with a flexible and responsive approach to the day’s needs. Able to follow routines and expectations established by classroom staff.
- Willingness to learn and support Montessori practices.
- Comfortable supervising both quiet and active activities, indoors and outdoors, in all seasons.
- Must meet Virginia Department of Education licensing requirements, including background checks and TB screening. CPR/First Aid and MAT certification are a plus; or willingness to complete certification after hire.
Work Schedule
This is a part-time, hourly position with a flexible schedule based on the school’s needs. Substitutes may be called in for half-day or full-day assignments during the academic year (late August through early June), including occasional work in Aftercare until 6:00 p.m.
- Warm, attentive, and patient demeanor with a strong commitment to supporting children’s social, emotional, and physical development. Ability to communicate clearly and kindly with children and adults.
- Reliable, organized, and proactive in maintaining a safe and nurturing environment.
- Willingness to learn about and support Montessori philosophy and practices
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and remain active throughout the workday.
- Must meet all Virginia Department of Education licensing requirements for childcare, including background checks and TB screening. CPR/First Aid certification and Virginia MAT certification preferred—or willingness to complete after hire.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $12-$20 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. SMS is committed to providing professional development opportunities to invest in our people.
